Morgan Silver Dollar Pendant

Carry a piece of the Old West. This pendant is built around a genuine Morgan silver dollar, 90% silver, minted between 1878 and 1921, finished with a .925 sterling silver bail. Every coin is an original, so its date and wear are unique to your piece.

Choose your style:

  • Plain ($200): the coin on its own, so the classic Lady Liberty design takes center stage.
  • Rope Trim ($350): hand-set in a sterling silver rope-trim bezel that frames the coin and adds strength.

The story behind the coin

The Morgan dollar was born in 1878, when Congress overrode President Rutherford B. Hayes's veto to bring back the silver dollar. Its designer, George T. Morgan, was a young English engraver recruited to the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia. Rather than the Greek goddess look of earlier coins, he wanted Liberty to look like a real American woman. He chose Anna Willess Williams of Philadelphia as his model and called her profile the most perfect he had ever seen. On the back, a bald eagle spreads its wings, holding arrows and an olive branch.

These dollars were struck in Philadelphia, New Orleans, San Francisco, and Carson City, Nevada, in the heart of Western silver country, and in Denver for the final year. Look on the back, just above "DOLLAR," for a small letter that shows where your coin was made: O, S, CC, or D, or no letter for Philadelphia. Carson City "CC" coins are especially prized because so few were made.

Production stopped in 1904, came back for one final year in 1921, and then gave way to the Peace dollar. Along the way, a 1918 law sent more than 270 million silver dollars to the melting pot. Experts estimate fewer than 1 in 10 Morgans made in those years survive today, which makes each one a true piece of American history you can wear.

Size: The coin is 1.5" (38 mm) across, a bold statement piece.

Care: Polish with a soft silver cloth. Store it in a bag so it doesn't tarnish, and keep it away from chlorine.
